National pronoun day was celebrated and planned by Megan Kaiser and the Gender Sexuality Alliance club, or G.S.A, planned this event. at St. Louis High School Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2024.
They handed out pamphlets, pins, and stickers. “Pronoun day is to recognize and respect those who do not identify with the pronouns that society labels them with. It is a day for everyone to display their pronouns because if everyone does so, then it becomes normalized in society and it no longer has to be considered “other” or “different” to do so. It is about treating everyone with the respect that they are owed as part of basic human decency. We have been doing this even for a few years now so we had all of the materials we needed. This year we decided to add buttons. Students designed the buttons and then I made the buttons and supervised our table, while students ran the event and explained the concept to people who came by,” stated Kaiser.
Pronoun day also helps influence and teach peers, teachers, and many others about pronouns.“I hope it has a positive impact where people can become more educated and open-minded. Oftentimes when a person doesn’t understand something, they shut it down because they don’t personally “get it.” I tell students that you don’t have to personally understand something to be willing to learn about it and respect it.” Kaiser stated.
One of the members of the G.S.A group is Skylar DuBois-Kleinhans. “We want to spread the influence of GSA, and well, the club and Mrs. Kaiser planned this event. what GSA has to offer. Even though it’s based around LGBTQ+, we are more so influenced by cultures and acceptance through anything that matters.”
Pronoun day is an important day for the G.S.A group and for students who have different pronouns. It is important to SLHS to make an impact on the school.
