Fortnite versus Call of Duty? You may have considered which was better at some point in your life, but we aim to solve that question using statistics and the St. Louis high school student body’s opinions.
To tackle the question of which is better, it is important to look at the stats like: how many concurrent players exist currently, how active are the communities, and how often do the games get content/ new installments.
Determining the amount of concurrent players will be found from “Steams” statistics displayed next to the games before launch. For Call of Duty, it has 62,667 concurrent players while Fortnite has a smashing total of 2,113,223. The all-time peaks for the games are Call of Duty BO2 with 3 million players and Fortnite at 11,616,374 players at once. For player count, Fortnite smashed Call of Duty out of the park with its peak player count of over 11 million.
Understanding the activity of each community however is a challenge, in order to do so, we will look at the amount of people involved in online forums for each game. Fortnite’s subreddit has 2 million active members while Call of Duty has over 10 million active members. Although COD doesn’t have the player count to show it, its community is still very active. However Fortnite pushes Call of Duty out of the way with the amount of content pushed out. Almost weekly there are new updates that add more skins, guns, and map changes into the game keeping players involved. Call of Duty, on the other hand, puts out a new game usually once a year and those games only receive new content about once a month.
When asking the student body what their ultimate opinion was about four out of five of people who were asked claimed the childhood they had playing COD lasted much longer than the five seconds of fame Fortnite had in 2018. Students like Ben Godfrey claimed that although he loved Fortnite, Call of Duty was very impactful for video gaming culture as a whole.
So, Fortnite versus Call of Duty? Although the current player counts say that Fortnite is superior, the older community and SLHS students claim that Call of Duty is so much more important to them as a game and experience.
