Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key, Florida Wed., Oct. 9, labeled as a category three storm. It had already ripped through Florida and headed off-shore into the Atlantic Ocean.
Many students at Saint Louis High School were watching this particular hurricane all over their social media pages including Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, etc. As for students like Annabelle Breen, she stated, “I’ve been seeing hurricane Milton all over my ‘For You’ page on TikTok. It’s pretty devastating watching all of the people who have to evacuate and lose their homes to this hurricane. Not only are they losing their homes, but they are also losing their lives.”
With all of this media coverage, Justin Rodriguez had extreme thoughts about the hurricane. He claimed, “Hurricane Milton will probably be one of the worst hurricanes we will see in a while.”
As it turned out, Rodriguez was in no way wrong as the category three Milton, at landfall, raged through Florida, causing immense damage; this led to 3.5 million power outages across the state and at least 16 confirmed deaths as a result.
Even teachers like Phil Maxwell had friends who were among those affected in the disaster: “The friends we have in Florida were displaced, and so instead of staying at their property, they had to go to a place that had higher ground. It’s a good thing they left because the part that they live in flooded and lost power …” said Maxwell.
“The communication he had to have with me had to be through email because the cell service isn’t adequate enough to communicate outside of their area,” continued Maxwell.
It’s a very unfortunate situation involving the ones affected by hurricane Milton, and students along with staff at SLHS wish for the best with what Florida has been recently hit with.
