Book club has officially begun here at St. Louis High School, and is led by Mr. Jordan Miller, president of both the Book Club and the Language Arts Club. The club will focus on developing a love for reading through various readings across the year and meetings take place within Miller’s room on Fridays.
“In Book Club, we meet one day a week, usually Fridays at lunchtime, and discuss the week’s assigned pages from the club’s novel. For this semester we are reading Gallant by V.E. Schwab. We will read a second book from a different genre in semester two,” said Miller. “My goal for Book Club this year is to broaden our exposure to different genres. Last year, we read fantasy and a classic Gothic romance; this year we are reading horror and historical/war fiction. The overall goal is to instill a love of reading in students, but I believe all current members are already bookworms. We will read about 50-80 pages a week in order to finish Gallant before winter break. This requires members to read for a minimum of 20 minutes a day, five days a week, though some members will read the assigned pages in one or two sittings,” Miller concluded.
“I have been a part of the book club for three years and have always enjoyed the people and community that are built around the book club. My first impressions were that it would be like English class but then I realized it was nothing like it, and it was just a bunch of book lovers like me,” said senior Bethany Bowerman. “My goal for the book club is to help host reading months and do book giveaways. Like a blind date with a book, I would describe Book Club as a bunch of book lovers talking about the book we are reading and discussing other book recommendations and how those books make us feel,” she added.
