The Detroit Tigers ended a decade-long postseason wait Friday, Sept. 27, against the Chicago White Sox. The Tigers had not made the playoffs since the class of 2025 was in second grade, in 2014. Yet, Tuesday, Oct. 1, St. Louis High School had a spirit day where the Tiger fans at SLHS dressed in Tiger apparel to celebrate game one, which was played that afternoon.
Freshman, Marcus Hoyt, who has been a Tigers fan for as long as he can remember, said, “I feel good knowing my favorite baseball team made the playoffs and who would have thought they would make it to the playoffs after they had not started so hot, but they pulled through when it mattered.” He also said, “I was kinda shocked when I heard they had a chance to make the playoffs. Then they clinched the wild card beating the White Sox 4-1. Detroit is a happening place. My favorite Tigers player is the first baseman, Spencer Torkelson, because he was a stud in his rookie season for the Tigers.” This is Torkelson’s third season playing with the Tigers after he joined the team back in 2021.
Another Tigers fan here at the school is the high school’s Spanish teacher, Mrs. Kisser also said, “I think it is exciting that so many of the Detroit teams are doing so well right now! I don’t think I had much of a reaction when I heard that the Tigers made the playoffs this year, but I am looking forward to a great playoff run!” The Tigers have many fans whether they have been fans for years or recently started being a fan. Kisser commented, “I’ve lived in Michigan most of my life, so the Tigers have always been my go to MLB team! My grandpa used to watch every game on the TV, so I have good memories of that. And I watched the 2006 season with my college roommates.” She continued, “While I am a fan of the Tigers, I don’t think I follow the team enough to have a current favorite player.”
Though the spirit day for the Tigers was only for a day, students will get more opportunities to dress in other sports team attire at other times. Mr. Brock said, “We will be doing more spirit days like this in the future for other teams such as the Detroit Lions.”
The Tigers will play again on Saturday Oct. 5, against the Cleveland Guardians at 1:08 p.m. EDT.
