St. Louis’s annual Homecoming dance occurred Sept. 14th at 8:00 p.m. following the theme of mystery or masquerade. Every year this dance, along with the previous day’s events and themes, brings fun and excitement to St. Louis High School students. Most of all, the dance brings things such as Homecoming proposals, dancing, and a Homecoming king and queen.
According to the Omella article, “What Is Homecoming in High Schools?” the Homecoming tradition first began in the early 1900s at college and university campuses with the purpose of welcoming alumni to their alma mater for a football game and other festivities. However, homecoming did not come to high schools until the early 1920’s as a way to celebrate the school coming together.
Junior Gracie Lombard, who has attended homecoming the past three years, shared, “I didn’t have as much fun the past years as I did this year. ” She also explained, “I had so much fun this year. I liked most of the music they played, and I was with a good group of people, and we just danced the night away.” Furthermore, fellow junior Leia Firman stated her experience at homecoming, saying, “My last homecoming experiences have not been that great as a result of personal reasons, but this year was really good as well as being super exciting and fun.”
Senior Landon Pestrue, who was voted Homecoming King alongside fellow senior and Homecoming Queen Elizabeth Starry, commented on his last homecoming dance, “Being my last homecoming dance as a senior, I thought it really matched up well with other years. I really liked the disco lights and thought the DJ was awesome because he would actually play our requested songs.”
