The Detroit Lions kicked off the season with an overtime victory against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday Sept. 8, at Ford Field.
The Rams took the lead late into the first quarter with a 41-yard field goal by Joshua Karty, but the Ram’s lead was short-lived because in the second quarter. The Lions returned with a 25-yard field goal by Jake Bates, and a one-yard touchdown run from Jahmyr Gibbs.
Football fanatic senior Landon Pestrue shared his thoughts on the first half of the game. He said, “The first half was a really exciting half to watch. The match up was really close in the first half. I’d say I was really happy by the end of the half when the Lions were up by a touchdown.”
Going into the third quarter, the Lions maintained the lead with a 52-yard passing touchdown from Jared Goff to Jameson Williams. The Rams countered with a two-yard rushing touchdown from Kyren Williams.
Following the third quarter, the Rams took the lead back with a 26-yard field goal from Karty, and a 9-yard passing touchdown from Mathew Staford to Cooper Kupp. This brought the score to 20 to 17 with the Rams in the lead. With 17 seconds left on the clock, the Lions made a critical field goal, bringing them into overtime.
The Lions won the coin toss and stormed down the field adding a touchdown from David Montgomery.
Senior Justin Rodriguez expressed his thoughts at the end of the game, “I felt it ended great, the Lions got a win but they should’ve targeted Amon-Ra St. Brown more.”
The Lions will play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next on Sunday, Sept. 15, at Ford Field.
