Captain St. Louis is a sacred tradition here at St. Louis High School. This event gives one male student from each grade a chance to represent his class and perform in front of the entire student body in a talent show. This has been a tradition for SLHS for at least 10 years.
Sophomore Bradynn Overla was chosen as his grade’s class representative for Captain St. Louis. Friday, Sept. 13, Overla put on quite a performance at the school’s homecoming assembly. “It sounded like fun because I like to do things out of my comfort zone. I came up with my routine in class the day Mrs. Kaiser mentioned it to me,” Overla stated. The hardest part about doing Captain St. Louis was, “Probably speaking in front of the entire school.” Overla surprised his class along with the rest of the school with the talent portion of where he played a little basketball while on stilts and wearing pigtails!
Although it was a tough decision on who would win the competition, Junior Tiger Russell, who is this year’s official Captain St. Louis, showed his school spirit and marked his place in St. Louis history. He had the crowd yelling and laughing with both his performances and his responses to anything he was asked. “Well I feel like I had the most spirit in my grade, so I figured I would be it for my junior class,” said Russell. He showed the school the true meaning of school spirit and showed the other participants how to amaze a crowd. “I came up with my idea when I was sitting in my backyard. It kind of just popped into my head. I feel like the hardest part is being in front of everyone and having all eyes on you.” All eyes were on him as he was dressed from head to toe just like Britney Spears!
The tradition continues to leave its mark through SLHS history having a new face to remember and continue to bring school spirit and a smile to everyone’s face.
