The Minecraft movie is set to come out Apr. 4, 2025 and is based on the game with the respective name which was first created in 2011 to allow the player to build whatever comes to his or her mind. However, does the movie live up to the expectations of the thousands of fans?
Many long-time fans of the franchise have mixed feelings about the production of the film as well as the look of the film itself; with the characters themselves not fitting the same blocky styling every other character does.
The film not only stars the famous Jack Black who starred in the Super Mario Bros movie as the voice of Bowser, but also familiar stars such as Emma Myers (“Wednesday”), Oscar nominee Danielle Brooks (“The Color Purple”), Sebastian Eugene Hansen (“Just Mercy”, “Lisey’s Story”), with Jennifer Coolidge.
Bryan Wing, a senior at St. Louis High School stated, “I have been a huge fan of the game since I was three years old. It honestly feels like a slap in the face as a fan to receive this as a love letter to the fanbase I grew up with.”
Numerous reactions to the film have been overwhelmingly negative due to the fans being mad a game they had enjoyed dearly as a child has been disrespected as such. Many people online have been comparing it to old animations, claiming those were better than the million-dollar production.
“Honestly, I think the movie needs a lot of work. It looks like it wants to be Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle but failed miserably. The cast is so random I don’t know who is meant to be who. I know we get Steve but at first I didn’t even know it was meant to be him. We don’t know if Alex is going to be there. I was excited for it with Minecraft being my childhood game, but this movie makes me cringe. I get the vibe it will be full of corny lines that give you enough second hand embarrassment to last a lifetime. I hope they improve it like they did the sonic movie,” said Kailee Reese, a senior at SLHS.
The rating of the movie is unknown at this time, yet the negativity is clear to show the movie low ratings when it comes to the theaters next year with the given feedback thus far. Many are hoping that something changes about it in the future.
