The courtyard at St. Louis High School has a few new visitors- baby ducks!
The mother of these baby ducks has been visiting SLHS for quite approximately three to four years now. The students and staff welcome the return of the duck every year, and it is something for everyone to enjoy and observe. Having animals around in a school for students can help boost morale and keep students smiling. A strong believer in this philosophy, Mrs. March says, “It’s called ‘duck therapy’ around here! Anytime you need a smile on your face, come down and look at the ducks.” In fact, many students who enjoy watching the ducks from class even refer to the mother duck by the name Violet. The name came to be because of the purple colored feathers she has on her wings.
The arrival of the duck is extra special this year, because the duck laid eggs in the courtyard, and now has ducklings! The ducks have been living in luxury with a kitty pool with a mini waterslide and other items so they can enjoy their time at SLHS before they are big enough to fly out of the courtyard.
Sophomore Sophia Miller is also a spirited supporter of the seasonal arrival of the ducks as well. Miller enjoys watching the ducks waddle around the courtyard from the comfort of her own classroom. In fact, she said, “Everyone seems to like seeing them!” Miller agrees that the ducks help boost morale around the school and give both students and staff something to look forward to.
Even with there being 12 ducks waddling around, everyone can come to agree that there is no ugly duckling in this bunch!
