The Model U.N. Club took a trip to the Ithaca RESD, where it competed in its final competition for the season March 19, 2023.
The members who competed at the competition consisted of multiple pairs who represented many countries. Curtis Brashaw and Joseph Rosenberger represented Germany, Rowan Harris and Ryan Hudson took on the role of the United States of America, Lexie Thayer and McKenzie Smith spoke for North Korea, and Lucee Mikek and Claire Hubble took on Nigeria.
Senior Lexie Thayer plans to take her involvement in the club to the next level. Next fall she will be attending Alma College where she will be a member of the collegiate Model U.N. team. She stated, “I am very excited for Model U.N. in college. I’m actually in New York competing for Alma College right now at NMUN Nationals 2024! I encourage everyone to at least try MUN if their school provides it. It’s a great experience!”
Another member of the Model UN Club is senior Rowan Harris. She has been a staple on the team for three years. With this being her last competition ever, she stated, “Unfortunately, my team did not get to present our resolution because the Delegation of Brazil didn’t know how to shut their yappers. I was really sad that I didn’t get to present my speech, but I hope that in the future the Model U.N. advisors will make rules for how long someone can speak to make sure everyone gets a chance to read their resolution.”
Just because Model UN is an academic club does not mean the members didn’t have fun while they were there. Thayer stated, “My favorite part of the competition was definitely Curtis’s- or should I say Germany’s- sass towards every member state. It was absolutely hilarious.” Additionally, Harris mentioned how it was fun and creative to see the “diplomatic ways to say ‘Your idea is stupid and you should never be able to speak again.’”
The club has officially completed the competition for the season and will find out its results in the weeks to come.
