Students of the St. Louis High School band traveled to Midland High School, Saturday, March 16, and received scores of “ones” after executing their final performance of the season.
After receiving “ones” at the previous State and Ensemble performances, every student qualified for state, making a total of 11 students heading to state. The same rules still apply for Solo and Ensemble at the state level, with no change whatsoever. The groups that received “ones” for the state performance were the percussion ensemble, percussion duet Rachel Jewell and Tori Patterson, and duet Rebekah Ross and Hannah Bobzien.
Woodwind player, senior Hannah Bobzien, shared her personal experience, “My state solo was executed perfectly. It was better than I ever could have hoped for. I may not have done very well in the other judging elements, but this experience was definitely one to remember. My duet with Rebekah went perfectly. We walked in there confident and came out with a ‘one’. I think we both worked extremely hard, and I am very sad that I can’t have this experience again next year. It’s definitely worth the time and effort put into it.”
Not only did Bobzien share her thoughts, percussionist Rowan Harris did as well. According to Harris, “The performance was really great. We got a ‘one’ after all the hard work, and I didn’t think there were any problems. Since I’m a senior and it’s my last year, I thought I would do something fun with my percussionist friends. My advice is to just do it because it’s like a once in a lifetime opportunity. The people there are really positive about it, and you get to skip some class time to practice and have fun with other people you are doing it with.”
As the Solo and Ensemble event wrapped up, more events surrounding the band are approaching and soon to finish for the season. The next performance will feature the jazz band traveling to Alma College to participate in the festival, April 12.
