With winter and its sports coming to a close at St. Louis High School, athletes have enjoyed their short-lived break before spring sports which started practicing again Monday, March 11.
There is a great deal to be excited about as the seasons change, but one constant form of entertainment over the years for residents of St. Louis is watching the SLHS track and field team. Last year St. Louis hired a new boys’ track coach, Tim Dejong, who was able to lead the team to a very successful season in all aspects of the sport. Dejong was not the new kid on the block however, as he had a year of coaching experience with the St. Louis middle school track team prior to his hiring. Returning athletes are excited to work with Coach Dejong for another season. Senior Ben March shared his feelings of excitement for the upcoming season with, “It’s my last year running track, so I want to do the best I can. I’m really excited to go out there and run my hardest for my team.”
Track and field isn’t the only spring sport to look out for from SLHS though as both baseball and softball will start in tandem with track and field. Both teams have more underclassmen than years prior, but they still plan to be big problems for their competition titles.
Additionally, this year the boys golf team is on the hunt for titles like they never were before. After two, now senior, students transferred (Brayden Bloom and Nick Wirgau) to St. Louis to play golf last year and more underclassmen are interested in the sport this year, there is a lot more experience and dedication on this year’s roster. Sophomore Xander Brock shared his thoughts on the golf season by stating, “This season is the most excited I’ve been to play a sport so far. We have Brayden and Nick who have been playing since they were young so they have a good understanding of what it takes to shoot a good score to help out our team.”
