The St. Louis wrestling team recently had a historic run at the Michigan High School Athletic Association State Finals March 2, 2024 with eight wrestlers placing all-state.
All-state is no easy feat, but St. Louis dished them up like soft-serve ice cream. The placings went as follows: Owen Fogel (106) took 3rd, Alex Rodriguez (113) took home the state title, Colin Kuhn (126) finished 4th, Drew Challender (157) took 7th, Udter Tweh (190) made the podium at 8th, Roman Anguiano (215) ended in 6th, Olesya Mullins (100) took runner up, and Tekoha Henry (190) had a 7th place finish. These athletes are at the top of the competition, and their drive is what pushed them to greatness.
With the previous record of all-staters being 5, the 2023-2024 wrestling team crushed that record by three. Coming into the season there was a lot of pressure on the wrestling team because they were ranked second in the state. It is safe to say that they don’t crack under pressure.
Tweh is a four-year wrestler, who came out with a medal from his first and final trip to the state meet. He stated, “I never thought I would be able to make it on the podium for individual states. I know Mr. Kuhn and I have put in a lot of hours of wrestling to show me how great I could be.” Although Tweh took a spot on the podium, he went on to mention, “If I would’ve had more of my commitment to wrestling, I could’ve been higher on that podium I believe.” Tweh was also a member of the varsity basketball team.
Another first-time all-stater was Henry. She is only the third girl in school history to make the podium! She mentioned, “Being down there at Ford Field wrestling was a very surreal feeling. After not even qualifying last year to become all-state, it was a very good feeling. It feels awesome that I was able to be a part of this school record and this team.” Henry is only a second-year wrestler, and she still has one more year to create an even bigger impact in the program.
With the season officially coming to a close, the Sharks are just waiting to see what they can accomplish in the years to come.
