Students and teachers went to school as usual, Feb. 28 without knowing that something so unexpected would happen… Carrie Knause Elementary School would lose power.
Therefore, those students needed somewhere to go, which ended up being the high school. During the fourth hour, some of the students from the high school went to the gym to help out the students and make sure everyone was safe.
Superintendent Ms. Mckittrick said, “The power outage was due to the high winds we had, so it caused an electrical issue which caused us to bring the kids to the high school gym.”
During the power outage, the first thought Ms. Mckittrick was to quickly transfer the students to the high school, because if they transferred the kids to Nikkari it would interfere with the other school lunches, and she knew the high school had the space and people could help out if needed. Mckittrick was super proud of how fast the high schoolers stopped what they were doing just to help with the kids.
Another teacher that was super happy with the high schoolers was second grade teacher, Mrs. Vance. Mrs. Vance mentioned how the staff at Carrie Knause was only given ten minutes to grab all the kids and line them up, and then put them on the buses. Mrs. Vance said, “We didn’t really have any congestion with the halls from the highschoolers, but the only problems we had was how parents were beating us there, because when the kids see someone they know they just run off, but they’re are still our responsibilities to know where they’re at and keep them safe.” Mrs. Vance thinks the high schoolers were super helpful. Everytime she asked any high school student if they could help, they never turned her down. She also said, “It was super awesome to know that the high schoolers could see the panic and the frustration on our faces.”
There’s no way the staff and students could have prepared for something like this so it was a great “trial run” for everyone to know that in a real event, everyone would know what to do.
