The St. Louis National Honor Society recently invited sophomores and juniors to become members of the National Honor Society, in which invitees received a letter Feb. 21.
The NHS organization provides many scholarships for students and is a great opportunity for those who are interested in going to college. Students are required to get an application from Mrs. Busch-Grabmeyer and in the packet, students are also required to type an essay on why they want to join NHS and what they plan on doing to become a member.
Ms. BG explains the concept about the club and what it has to offer, “National Honor Society is a service organization that recognizes students for their efforts in scholarship, leadership, service, and character. We provide these students with many scholarship opportunities while also learning the importance of our community through service hours. Students who choose to apply are asked to complete an application process and then those students’ applications are reviewed by the Faculty Council. When students hit the criteria, they are inducted into the chapter in a ceremony where the students and their family are invited to attend.”
Furthermore, NHS student president Curtis Brashaw describes the NHS, in which he states, “As president of the NHS, I help our advisors, Ms. Kisser and Ms. BG, plan meetings and reach out to outside organizations. My advice in general to students is to strongly consider joining the NHS. It teaches valuable skills like the pillars of the NHS: leadership, scholarship, character, and service. To those planning on joining, I would recommend they take time to strengthen their leadership skills.”
Junior Rebekah Ross shares her feelings about accepting the letter from the NHS. According to Ross, “When I got the letter this year, I planned on applying to join because I think it will benefit my college application. I plan on applying to some private colleges, and I believe that the NHS will spark their interest in my application. Even going into the job market, I think it will help!”
Students who received these letters from the committees have until March 1, to acquire the packet from Mrs. BG as these packets are due by March 15. Once the packets are turned in, students have to wait until the faculty council chooses the students to participate in the formal induction ceremony happening April 16.
