The Sharks’ team traveled to Lakeview to secure a regional title for the third year in a row. Fans were up on their feet, cheering on the Sharks’ all night long as they secured the title by winning 69-5 against Muskegon Catholic Central, and a huge win over Lakeview 46-14.
One of the people who showed up, Kylie Acker, enjoyed singing the fight song after every pin. Acker said, “My favorite part was watching the wrestling team dominate per usual. It’s also cool seeing the wrestler’s goal finally happen.” She also said, “I’m sad about not being able to ride the spectator bus, but it was a great way to end it.” Overall, it was a great experience for her, and she can’t wait to see what the future holds for this team.
Coach Kuhn said, “The regional championship was something we talked about and prepared for since the first practice in November.” The team was constantly updating their top work for the pinners while maintaining positioning so they wouldn’t give up any bonus points. Earning a regional title three years in a row impacted the wrestling program because it helped the Sharks’ as a whole earn the reputation of a top-notch program.
Alex Rodriguez thinks earning the regional title helped the team bond more and it showed all the technique they have been doing in the room is working. After winning Rodriguez’s match against Lakeview, for his celebration Rodriguez decided to shush the crowd. People were and still are confused why he decided to do this, but the mystery is finally answered. Rodriguez said, “The reason I shushed the crowd was because I didn’t like the Lakeview team in general, and the kid was making me really mad.” He also said, “Winning the regional title felt amazing, and my favorite memory so far was watching everyone’s celebration after each match, and dancing right before we got the trophy.”
The Sharks are looking for the last Mitten trophy to add to their collection this year, at the Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Feb. 23-24.
