The St. Louis pom pon team headed to the state competition Sunday, Feb. 11, at Eastern Michigan University to compete in the Class C/D bracket.
The team ended up taking home fifth place, which was a huge improvement for the team since its first competition earlier in the season. After a long and successful season, the pom pon team is very happy about its success, and its seniors are especially proud!
Senior Ava Frost, who has been a member of the team for three years shared, “It was an amazing feeling to make it to state my senior year after not qualifying last year.”
Fellow senior and pom pon member Mckenzie Smith is also proud of the team. Smith, who has been on the team for four years said, “I was so happy when I found out we made it to states. I had a good feeling, and it makes my last year perfect.”
For the seniors, it’s especially important because it marks a great achievement in their pom pon career. “I am so proud of this team,” stated Smith. “I am happy that we went to states. My freshman year, I never imagined making it this far.”
“As a senior, I am beyond proud at how far we have come as a team. Starting the year with new coaches and new teaching styles was hard to adapt to,” shared Frost. She continued, by saying, “Overall, it has strengthened the team, and I can’t wait to see what the team will grow into next season.”
The seniors are surely sad about having to leave the team this year as well. Frost shared, “I’m sad but also happy to know it is my last season. It’s hard to let go of something that has become your life and people who have become your family, but everything has to come to an end.”
It’s not all sadness though, as the seniors do have a few pieces of advice for people interested in pom pon. “My best advice for those interested in pom is just do it,” said Frost. “I have created the best memories with my teammates and pom has taught me to persevere even when times are rough.”
After state, the pom team finished the season with a guy-girl performance at the varsity boys’ basketball game Friday, Feb. 16.
