The Sharks’ wrestling team hosted team districts Wednesday Feb. 7 and dominated Carson City 69-12 and Ithaca 57-18, earning their ninth district title in a row. The Sharks’ will wrestle Wednesday Feb. 14, 2024, in Lakeview to secure their spot at the MHSAA state meet.
Wrestlers going undefeated were Olesya Mullins, Owen Fogel, Colin Kuhn, Martine Wiggins, Drew Challender, and Ramon Anguiano.
Coach Kuhn mentioned the team wrestled good enough to dominate both teams, but there were some lows. Kuhn said, “I don’t think the team hit its peak yet, and I hope they reach it for regional and state.” Kuhn also added overall as a team they need to get back to where we were at the beginning of the year, with not getting pinned while wrestling good teams.
The Sharks’ also wrestled Saturday Feb. 10, for Individual Districts in Ithaca. The Sharks took 14 wrestlers with 11 placing top four and moving on to regionals.
The wrestlers placing first were Owen Fogel, Alex Rodriduez, Genaro Soto, Colin Kuhn, Laythan Haworth, Martine Wiggins, and Drew Challender. The team had 10 out of 14 wrestlers in the finals, which is amazing.
Also, congratulations to Wiggins for earning his 100th victory, which is a great accomplishment not only for Wiggins, but for the program.
Tweh is super excited for the postseason, he can’t wait for the upcoming tournaments. He said “I can’t believe my wrestling career is almost over. I wish I can do it all again.” Tweh also wishes he can practice in the wrestling room more especially since it’s his last year on the wrestling team, but he understands dual sporting is really hard.
The Sharks’ will be back in action Feb. 14 to get their regional title and secure their spot to wrestle at the Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo.
