The St. Louis Pom Pon team had an exciting weekend Jan. 20, 2024, as they competed in the regional competition at Heritage High School in Saginaw. Success was strong for the Lady Sharks as they worked together to put on a state-qualifying performance.
Senior member McKenzie Smith said, “I had an amazing feeling about qualifying this year, and I am beyond happy that we did. Going sophomore year was the best feeling ever, and I can’t wait to hear the crowd cheering for us.”
The Poms coach, Kaydee Komperda, was so proud of her team and said, “When the team qualified for the state championship I was ecstatic! I had full confidence that they would make it to states, but it made the moment that much sweeter to hear them announce us as a state qualifier. The team ended up exceeding my expectations while they performed their routine. Other than qualifying for states, my favorite part of this season has been watching the team improve and building stronger bonds with each other. I’m very proud of the team, and I’m so excited to watch them compete at state!”
Another senior and team member Ava Frost said, “I felt as if we were as prepared as we could’ve been heading to regionals. I thought we would have a higher percentage, but I had a suspicion we would make it! To get ready for the state competition we are changing the routine a little and making it fit with our strengths as a group. We are also practicing more to make sure we’re well-prepared.” Frost has gone to state once before during her sophomore year in 2022 and is excited to be going again.
The team will compete in the state competition Feb. 10, 2024, at Eastern Michigan University where they will perform against five other schools for the number one spot.
