St. Louis High School hosted a competition amongst the student body right within its halls Friday, Jan. 26, to show support for the play-off game between Detroit Lions and the San Francisco Forty-Niners!
The Lions have had a long and storied history of losses and has been colloquially known as the team that everyone expects to lose. It’s become something of a Michigan tradition to watch the Lions lose every Thanksgiving. However, this season, the Lions have been excelling on the field, with a standing of 12-5 as of now.
The Lions now have a pretty good chance of heading to the Superbowl, and everyone in Michigan is rooting for them right now. That includes the students of St. Louis High School, who took the opportunity to dress in Lions gear to show support Friday.
Bryan Anderson, the athletic director at SLHS wanted to put together a day for all students to show their pride for the Lions. “We wanted to generate some excitement for the Lions,” Anderson shared.
In fact, the Lions have had a history with SLHS. “For those that are unfamiliar,” continued Anderson. “The Lions donated us $30,000 three years ago, so I definitely have a lot of pride for the Lions for awarding us a grant towards our football program.”
With all that aside, though, the students (and staff) of SLHS made sure to dress in as much Lions attire as possible. Whether it was a fully decked outfit, or a simple blue and white color scheme, the Lion pride could be seen throughout the hallways!
The winner of the student competition was senior Kylie Acker. Acker’s outfit was a standout, including hair, a full outfit, stickers, accessories, and even a sign! Regarding her win, Acker shared, “I was very excited when they said my name. I worked really hard for it. I really had to put together an outfit that would impress the judges.”
On the staff side, fan favorite Mrs. Hanline took first place. Hanline has been to both playoff games, as well as many regular season games throughout the year.
The Lions mean a lot to many students at the school, and especially to Acker. “The Lions mean a lot to me, so I’m very proud of myself for winning this,” concluded Acker.
