The St. Louis girls’ varsity basketball team claimed the flag at the Shark tank against Ithaca Jan. 19, 2024.
The last time the flag called St. Louis home was in 2020 when the varsity volleyball team defeated the Jackets. Luckily, the basketball team came through and dominated against Ithaca with a score of 49-24.
Many key performances contributed to the victory over Ithaca. Senior Josie Schrot came away with three steals and 19 points, and Natalee Hoyt had 13 points and 7 rebounds. These ladies have been a constant on the team since their sophomore year. Additionally, Olivia Good capped off their victory by banking two free throws at the end of the fourth quarter. Good stated, “I was very nervous when it came to shooting my free throws. It was an amazing feeling to hear everyone cheer when I made them.”
Good commented on the performance of herself and the team stating, “I think the game went very well! We have worked well together all season. Some of us, including myself, came into the game pretty nervous not knowing the outcome. We had a good game and our hard work paid off. Also, It was an out-of-body experience running around the gym with the flag because we hadn’t had it in four years. It is an amazing feeling getting the flag back our senior year, and I can’t wait to see where we are for the rest of the season!” Good is a strong voice on the court and she knows the game well.
Coach Knauf is the only coach who has won both the bell and the flag. He has produced successful athletes in his 35 years of coaching at St. Louis. He stated, “The game went well. Defensively, we did exactly what we were supposed to do. We were good and stuck with the game plan and scouting report.”
The Sharks will be back on the court Jan. 22, at Vestaburg High School where they will tip off at 6:30 p.m.
