The Saint Louis High School wrestling team had a busy week, as the team traveled to Michigan Lutheran Seminary Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2024, and came home 2-0, beating Ithaca 54-14 and MLS 61-12.
Following Wednesday’s meet, the Sharks’ girls wrestling traveled to Gladwin on Friday, and had five top three placers.
Junior Tekoha Henry placed second with her only loss to the second ranked girl in the state. Henry thought she did really well on her top position and did what she learn in the room, but also feels felt she needs to work on the neutral position. Henry will continue to put in the work for the upcoming meets.
The team also hosted the 52nd Annual Bob Threloff Individual Tournament, placing first overall with a total of 279 points.
Sophomore Paul Eldredge completely dominated Saturday’s tournament with two pins. He said, “I think I did really well, but one thing I wish I did better at was listening to my coaches more, but overall I think I wrestled well.”
Senior Udter Tweh is super proud of himself with his first place finish, although Tweh said, “I wish I would have finished my headlock, and performed it like we do everyday at practice.” Tweh feels like these past tournaments are gonna help him out a lot for the end of season because these tournaments show him how important it is not only to be good individually, but to contribute to the team. Tweh added, “As the season goes on, I do want to contribute more points towards the team, by winning more matches and getting better with the stuff we work on in practice.” Tweh placed first, but wished he did better at his takedowns so he didn’t have to go into overtime. Tweh said, “I need to stop waiting until the last minute to take people down.” Tweh will continue to put in the work for the upcoming tournaments.
Coach Kuhn said, “Winning our home tournament and having nine champs in the process is a pretty big deal; that was satisfying for us to take care of business at home, especially since we fell short the last two years.” Kuhn felt like the wrestlers had to work on the neutral position a lot more, but were good on top as usual. Kuhn said, “It was nice to see a couple sophomores like Drew Challender and Laythan Haworth take the next step. Those two won competitive weight classes and also won individual matches they were losing last year.”
The Sharks wrestling team is back in action Jan. 10, in Millington against Millington and Carrollton.
