The Saint Louis girls’ basketball teams hosted their first game Dec. 5 against the Huskies of Breckenridge. Both teams started their season off with a bang, as the varsity team beat the Huskies 37-35, and the JV team won in a nailbiter 32-31.
Varsity player and freshman Kenadie Henry thinks she still needs to work on her confidence because she gets nervous, but thinks it’s understandable because it’s varsity. Henry thinks this season is going by pretty well, but it’s still early in the season. Henry said, “I think I did really well, and I think my defense was good and there weren’t very many fouls yet for me.” Henry wishes the overall game was longer because she feels like only having 4 quarters is way too short for a basketball game and it goes by way too fast.
Fellow JV player, sophomore Trinity Bergey, thought she played well but wishes she could have done better at passing. Bergey said, “My defense was really good during the game, but I wish I had taken better shots and caught the ball when I knocked it out of the other player’s hand.”
Another JV player, freshman Paige Lueack also thought she played well and she’s super proud of the team that they held on strong and didn’t give up. Luneack said, “One thing I wish I could do better at would be not getting fouled so much and keeping control of my body while guarding.” Luneack thought she did really well at looking down low and thinking quickly. Overall, Luneack still thinks it was a great game to start the season even though mistakes occurred.
Varsity player, junior Brynn Saxton, is super excited for this season and she’s also super proud of the girls for getting their first win. Saxton said, “I did okay, it definitely wasn’t the worst game that’s for sure.” Saxton also said, “I need to work on my rebounding and putting it back up.” Saxton’s mainly excited to just play with the team again and create memories.
The Sharks’ varsity basketball team is back in action this Friday Dec 8 against Nouvel, and the JV team is back in action Thursday Dec. 7, against Nouvel.
