The St. Louis High School jazz and steel bands are going to be performing their annual Blues in the Night concert in the high school cafeteria Saturday, Nov. 18, at 7 P.M. to raise money for the music program.
Blues in the Night is a time-honored tradition, having been an annual event for 31 years. At the concert, viewers can pay $15 ahead of time, or $20 at the door, to watch a performance by both the jazz band and the steel band. Another aspect of Blues in the Night that appeals is the food. At the event, there is a buffet-style arrangement of different meal combinations.
Both bands work incredibly hard to put this event together, and director Stephen Lawhorne agrees. “I’m excited for our ‘first performance’ of the year overall,” shared Lawhorne. “Additionally, there are some great soloists to showcase in the jazz and steel bands.”
It’s not just the director putting in the work for the event, though. The student musicians put in hours of rehearsal to get things running. Senior Rachel Jewell, a member of both bands, has been performing in Blues in the Night throughout her high school career, and it’s always a highlight.
“Blues in the Night is an amazing experience that creates a real performance setting,” stated the senior. “It’s a great chance to get on stage and actually perform for an audience.”
Excitement is absolutely building for the event! Lawhorne concluded with, “I like to have a great crowd for our performances, and this event never disappoints.”
With the performance coming up, both nerves and excitement are high! The performance will be held in the high school cafeteria Saturday, Nov. 18, at 7 P.M. Tickets are $15 if purchased before the concert and $20 if purchased at the door. Contact a jazz or steel band student to purchase a ticket ahead of time!
