Mrs. Reeves’ and Mrs. Kaiser’s sophomore English classes completed a Shakespearean scavenger hunt throughout the hallways of St. Louis High School Thursday, Nov. 2, to put together a Macbeth themed puzzle!
When coming up with a way to get her students invested in Shakespeare’s classic tragedy Macbeth, Reeves knew she wanted to do something different. A scavenger hunt was just the thing!
“They get a picture, and a quote, from Macbeth, and they’re out there finding their clues,” explained Reeves. The quote isn’t easy to decipher, though. “The clue is written in Shakespearean language, and they have to read it and interpret it. The goal is to get back here with all six of their clues in time to receive their final clue.”
Reeves wasn’t alone in this endeavor, though. Fellow English teacher Megan Kaiser helped create the project for the students as well!
“Mrs. Reeves found the idea first, but I had time to sort of run with it,” shared Kaiser. “I found the pictures, and I translated the clues into Shakespearean language. It’s been way busier than I thought with this activity! I thought I would maybe have time to put up a bulletin board, but the students are really invested!”
It’s true that the students are invested, as the English teachers aren’t the only ones excited about this endeavor. Two of Reeves’ students, Harley and Hayden Mader, shared their thoughts on the experience.
“It’s pretty fun,” shared Harley. “We don’t usually get the opportunity to do things like this where we’re in and out of class, so it’s a pretty good change of pace for me.”
With the seeming success of this activity, time will tell whether Reeves, Kaiser, and perhaps other teachers, will engage in other fun activities like this in the future.
