A few St. Louis High School students have some uncommon hobbies, and two of these students are ice-skating athlete Maya Massaway, and makeup artist Kaylie Lassen!
Massaway is a talented ice skater, and competes a few times a year. She has competed both as a team and individually. Last year, she individually placed first at her competition! Her individual routine was to the song “Material Girl” by Madonna. Her group routine was a Mary Poppins compilation. The group did well at the competition, despite a few mistakes.
Massaway would like to share some insight on her skating experience. She said, “I have practices two times a week on Tuesdays and Saturdays. My biggest accomplishments in skating are winning first place at my last competition and joining the Journey to Imagination team, which is theater on ice.” Massaway also would like to add that she is proud of her solo routine, and she thought her spins were balanced and her jumps were clean.
The competition Maya won last year was called the Mountain Town Classic. At this competition, there are events such as Basic Skills Elements, Free Skate to music, Showcase events, Dance, and more.
While she isn’t sure of all upcoming future competitions, Massaway is sure she will be competing in a competition in February as well as March of 2024.
Another hobby you don’t see every day at SLHS is doing makeup! Freshman and talented makeup artist Kaylie Lassen would like to share her makeup experience.
Lassen is experienced with makeup, and has been doing it since she was five years old. She learned from her mom who went to college for makeup and hair, and has been interested ever since. Lassen does makeup for weddings, proms, homecomings, as well as for Terror on 27 for herself when she worked there. Lassen is looking forward to another wedding she is doing makeup for Nov. 4. In fact, she said, “My favorite part is probably the eye shadow because I can be super dramatic about it. I would love to do anyone’s makeup for anything they have going on.”
Readers can keep their eyes out for more future articles on the uniqueness of SLHS students.
