The St. Louis High School Language Arts Club completed its second competition of the year at the Ithaca RESD Oct. 18, 2023.
Currently ranked first in the Tri-Valley Conference, the SLHS Language Arts Team has been on a roll with their past two competitions. Seniors Rowan Harris and Carson Butcher, as well as freshman Aleigha Rogers, are the leading scorers of the team and the Tri-Valley Conference. Ms. B.G., the advisor of the club, commented, “Rowan, Carson, and Aleigha had the number one paper, and our number two paper was Claire, Mckenzie, and Lucee. Combined we have an overall ranking of 97% out of 100%.” Additionally, Harris stated, “It’s kind of mindblowing [that we are ranked first in the conference] because we are such a small school. We don’t even fill our van, but Ovid-Elsie and Swan Valley bring buses. Sometimes you don’t need an army to get it done.” Harris has been a staple on the team and her hard work is paying off.
Senior and first-year member Claire Hubble stated, “I think it went really well, and we met our goal for the number of pieces we had to turn in. We learned we’re currently in first.” Harris added, “I think it went pretty smoothly. We were a lot more coordinated because we already went to one before. It wasn’t bad last time, but we just improved this time.”
Members of the team are given a writing prompt where they can collaborate with each other or work by themselves. Hubble explained, “Yesterday was a character sketch, and we got a picture of a person and we had to make our interpretation of them. I like the character sketch one rather than the first one. I had more fun with the creative side.” Harris added, “I love fictionalized journal prompts. It is my favorite thing to do, and it allows you to get in the head of a character.”
Be on the lookout for their next competition results which will be held virtually Nov. 16, 2023.
