A few clubs and sports are kicking off at St. Louis High School, which includes Business Professionals of America (BPA), bowling, as well as a new club, Robotics!
At SLHS, with winter comes the start of clubs! BPA held a lunch recruitment meeting Oct. 11, to prepare for the regional competition in January. Mrs. Biehl and Mrs. Reeves are in charge of BPA, and were very excited to see some new faces at the meeting. Biehl says, “We are hoping to bring on some new members this year, including freshmen.” In BPA, there is an event for everyone! Mrs. Biehl would like to add why people should join BPA. She said, “To try something new, develop skills you can’t learn in the classroom, network with students from all over the state and country, the state conference, nationals, The Amway Grand, and of course to have a little fun with Mrs. Reeves and I, the best BPA advisors ever!” There is still time to sign up, just stop in to see Mrs. Biehl to pick up a registration form.
Sophomore Hayden Shattuck is a returning member of BPA. Shattuck placed in the top five of his event at regionals and advanced as one of only two freshmen to qualify for the state competition last year. Shattuck is very passionate about BPA and is looking forward to the upcoming year. In fact, he said, “I’m excited for the experience I will gain from BPA. My favorite thing was last year making memories with my friends and having fun at states.”
A new club is being introduced at SLHS this year – Robotics! Mr. Nehmer is excited to be introducing this club. Any students interested in the club can talk to Mr. Nehmer about joining. Mr. Nehmer is currently looking for students seriously interested in partaking in this club. He said, “Students that are interested in STEM activities should join Robotics because they will find other students with shared interests and Robotics can provide a lot of academic opportunities for students. The cool thing about this club, at least for me, is that it is going to be primarily student driven. Students will get to make the big decisions about what this club is doing and how we accomplish our goals. The state of Michigan is very willing to provide us with resources that will help us accomplish our goals as a club because the state really wants to further STEM programs.”
Another winter activity starting up is bowling! There will be an informational meeting Tuesday, Oct. 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the high school media center for those interested in participating. The first practice will take place Nov. 9, with the first varsity matches being Dec. 9. A four year member of bowling, senior Lilly Massaway is hopeful about the upcoming season. She said, “I’m really excited to compete. Myself and other bowlers have been practicing on the off season and have shown vast improvements.” Massaway also explained her enthusiasm for bowling, and that if you aren’t in any other winter sport, to sign up and give it a try.
