At the Ithaca RESD Wednesday, Sept. 20, the St. Louis High School Language Arts Club had its first event of the school year. However, what does the club try to accomplish at these events? Senior Lucee Mikek was happy to explain some inner workings of the event and said, “We all had the same (writing) prompt this time, and the prompt was about a man who was becoming too absorbed in his work, so we had to write ‘Journal Entries’ both for the man and surrounding characters to build our own narrative.”
Another senior, Rowan Harris added to that and said, “We are assigned a different prompt and writing style we have to use every time we go to an event, and both are a bit more uncommon than what’s found in typical school classes. Then we only have a certain amount of time to finish our writing(s).” Mikek added, “I’m going to read a variety of fiction books next time so I can have some experience to base my work off of.”
Mikek is one of the new faces to the Language Arts Club this year.In fact, the club has a lot of new faces with only two current members having been involved last year. Harris said, “I’m a fan of this team! It’s different, as we only have one recurring member aside from myself, but I think we all work well together. We have fun.” Mikek reiterated, “I was a little hesitant about joining Language Arts Club this year because I didn’t think I was qualified for it, but there’s a lot of other new members with me this year and we all feel right at home!”
Another senior and new member, Claire Hubble, said she was surprised by the ominous, competitive climate of the event, “I would say it’s definitely competitive but not in the way I’m used to. We are separated from the other teams competing so we never really see our opponents.” She added, “I love the club! I was definitely nervous at first, but I felt very comfortable with the group.”
The Language Arts Club’s next event will again be at the Ithaca RESD building, but the date has yet to be determined.
