On Monday, Sept. 11, the St. Louis Girls’ Golf team continued its domination out on the green at Hidden Oaks Golf Course with a home meet. The team was led by senior Josie Schrot, who shot an 86 and placed third overall. There were other exceptional performances on display from Natalee Hoyt and Emma Worthy, who both shot a 96 and 109, respectively.
It was no surprise for many fans of high school girls’ golf that the Sharks would continue to add spectacular performances one after another, but this year the team is mostly seniors. One such senior, Natalee Hoyt, said, “We have a lot to work on as individuals and as a team if we want to win regionals again this year.” Hoyt then explained, “I feel like we’re overall on pace for making that happen though.” When asked what she’s doing to improve this season, Hoyt said, “I’ve been helping with form corrections during practice, but I have also been focusing on golfing as much as possible and getting reps in. Then it lets me focus on each stroke, my own performance, and not really worrying about the other people out there.”
After winning the first regional title in Shark Girls’ Golf history last year, they are looking to keep their streak going into this season too. Andrea Biehl, the varsity girls’ golf coach, said, “I’m satisfied with the team’s performance on Monday, but I feel that we all need to work on our chipping because that’s where we all struggle a little bit as a team.” Speaking of teamwork, the girls have a reputation for being team-oriented, and in a sport that focuses on the individual, it’s an especially strong trait for the Sharks to display. When asked how they do this so well, Coach Biehl stated, “Golf can feel like a very individual sport but focusing on our team score and celebrating its improvement throughout the season has really helped. It is a motivator for their individual performance when they remember that their team is relying on them. Our goal is to do well at regionals as a team. We aren’t thinking about individual performances alone.” Senior Josie Schrot added to that with, “We work on teamwork when we are all together like our van rides to and from meets. We are always talking and voice any concerns to prevent drama from occurring.”
You can see the lady Sharks golf again Monday, Sept. 18, at Tullymore Golf Club, in the Lady Tullymore Invitational.
