With week two of varsity football wrapped up and week three almost finished, the St. Louis Sharks are off to a solid start. They had an away game with the Saranac Redhawks and suffered a brutal loss 6-44, but bounced back in a home game against Hesperia where the Sharks came out on top with a final score of 16-6. So with a starting record of 1-1, the Sharks are looking to keep their win streak going throughout this season going forward.
Against the Redhawks, the top offensive performers of the night included Drew Challender, Carson Tweh, and Trenton Farkas. Challender had an 18 yard pass, Tweh had a total of 24 rushing yards and one touchdown, and Farkas was the recipient of Challender’s 18 yard pass. On defense against Saranac, exceptional performances were had by Laythan Haworth, Karson Tweh, and Trenton Farkas. Haworth and Tweh both had nine tackles respectively while Farkas had one block.
Senior Joshua Dew said, “I feel like offense was our weak point against them (Saranac). We had a hard time making plays when they mattered for us.” Speaking more in depth, Dew said that, “A big problem I feel we had was rushing yards. It was difficult to stay consistent.”
When asked what the team changed in the second game, sophomore Haworth stated that, “I feel like we have improved a lot since our last game, like, with supporting and trusting each other to do our jobs out there and protect each other.” Talking about how the team has matured as individuals and as a program Haworth added, “Both this year and last year, a lot of us are underclassmen that have been led by a couple seniors, so we’ve kind of had to step up and lead in ways that we’re not used to. And I think that helps us understand each other as people and as players when we’re all focused on the game.”
Against Hesperia, the Sharks had a better overall performance on both ends of the field. Top offensive performances include Tweh with 38 rushing yards and a touchdown, Dew with 60 rushing yards, and Drew Challender with 5 carries. The Sharks doubled down on defense, with impressive plays from Dew, Parker Wonch, and Ramon Anguiano, who had a combined total of 18 tackles and 3 sacks.
You can see the Sharks play again at home this upcoming Friday, Sept. 8, against Michigan Lutheran Seminary. Kick off is at 7:00 p.m.
